Synopsis

Pinon, the boy who flows within his body, the blood of the three races (the Dragons, the fairies and the humans), is actually the son of the Courageous One, Pietro. Pinon's encounter with a mysterious animal, Pap, opens up the door to an adventurous journey. He befriends Luna and Marco on the way. However, when he learns that his adventure will determine the fate of PoPoLoCrois, Pinon hardens his heart and leaves his friends. Unknown to him, this is an introductory chapter to a new adventure and Pinon will realise that he must resolve the bigger crisis present in PoPoLoCrois.

Provenance

Where it came from

The 2003 Popolocrois television series serves as a continuation of the narrative established in the popular PlayStation role-playing games developed by G-Artists and Epics. Produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, the series was designed to adapt the whimsical and melancholic world created by manga artist Yosuke Tamori. The creative team aimed to maintain the gentle, fairy-tale aesthetic of the source material while expanding on the journey of the young Prince Pietro, prioritizing emotional character arcs and the exploration of the fantasy landscape over high-octane action.

Upon its release, the series was noted for its visual fidelity to Tamori’s distinct character designs, which often featured soft, rounded shapes and an evocative, storybook color palette. While the show faced the challenge of translating the non-linear exploration of a video game into a structured episodic television format, it was generally well-received by audiences familiar with the franchise. It remains a notable example of early 2000s Japanese fantasy animation that sought to bridge the gap between interactive media and traditional serialized storytelling.
