A pilot for a proposed Popolocrois Monogatari animation project in 1993. It was publicly released 7 years later on the first DVD volume of Popolocrois Monogatari. The pilot's main purpose was to find funding for a theatrical film that was quickly morphed into a possible TV anime instead (which finally happened half a decade later).

Where it came from
The Popolocrois Monogatari pilot film was produced in the mid-1990s as a promotional asset to introduce audiences to the world of Yohsuke Tamori’s manga series. It served as a vital bridge between the print material and the eventual 1996 PlayStation role-playing game, aiming to establish the whimsical, fairy-tale aesthetic that would define the franchise. The production was intended to showcase the potential for an animated adaptation, emphasizing the lush, painterly backgrounds and character designs that closely adhered to Tamori's original vision.
The pilot is characterized by a soft, ethereal art style that captures the series' focus on childhood wonder and emotional storytelling. While it was never intended for wide commercial release, it circulated among animation enthusiasts and industry insiders as a proof of concept. The design was praised for its fidelity to the manga's gentle tone, successfully setting the stage for the beloved video game series and the subsequent television anime, which remained faithful to the pilot's visual identity.
