Pretty Boy Detective Club

Pretty Boy Detective Club emerged in 2021 as a television adaptation of the light novel series by Nisio Isin, produced by the acclaimed studio Shaft. Directed by Akiyuki Shinbo, the series leans into the studio's signature surreal aesthetic, characterized by sharp geometric compositions, vibrant color palettes, and unconventional camera angles. The project was conceived as a stylized mystery drama that blends high-concept school life with elaborate aesthetic sensibilities.

The character designs were crafted by Hiroki Yamamura, who adapted the original illustrations by Kinako to fit the animation medium. The series was designed to emphasize a heightened, dreamlike visual language that mirrors the protagonists' obsessive focus on aesthetics and beauty. Upon its release, the show was recognized for its distinct visual identity and its commitment to the eccentric narrative tropes common in Nisio Isin's body of work, marking it as a notable collaboration within Shaft’s expansive portfolio.
