Usagi Tsukino and her friends are living peaceful lives as ordinary high school students. Mamoru Chiba, Usagi's boyfriend, is headed to America to study abroad. At the airport, after Mamoru proposes to Usagi, he is then mysteriously extinguished by someone's hand. Unable to accept Mamoru's disppearance, Usagi hides her memory of that event. Meanwhile, Shadow Galactica, led by Sailor Galaxia, as well as Sailor Starlights appear in front of Usagi. Without knowing whether Sailor Starlights are allies or enemies, the Sailor Guardians are robbed of their Sailor Crystals, the source of their power, by almighty Sailor Galaxia, and are killed by one after another. In a hopeless situation, Usagi, as Eternal Sailor Moon, challenges Sailor Galaxia for the final battle.

Where it came from
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Cosmos The Movie: Part 1 was released in 2023 as the two-part conclusion to the Sailor Moon Eternal project, which serves as a direct continuation of the Sailor Moon Crystal series. Produced by Toei Animation and Studio Deen, this film adapts the final 'Stars' story arc from Naoko Takeuchi’s original manga, bringing the narrative to its definitive cinematic close. The production aimed to honor the aesthetic sensibilities of the source material while utilizing modern digital animation techniques to heighten the emotional stakes of the Sailor Guardians' ultimate battle.
The film was directed by Tomoya Takahashi, who sought to balance the high-fantasy stakes of the cosmic conflict with the intimate character growth that defines the series. The character designs were handled by Kazuko Tadano, a pivotal figure who also worked on the original 1990s anime, creating a deliberate visual bridge between the classic iteration and this contemporary finale. The movie received positive attention from long-term fans for its faithfulness to the darker, more introspective tone of the original manga compared to previous television adaptations.
