Professor Pain

Professor Pain was released as an original video animation by the independent studio Green Bunny in 1998. During this period, the Japanese animation industry saw a surge in niche titles distributed directly to the home video market, allowing smaller studios to explore mature and experimental themes that fell outside the scope of mainstream television broadcasting. The work is representative of the stylized, high-contrast aesthetic favored by Green Bunny, which often utilized minimal animation frames to emphasize character design and atmosphere.

The production sought to lean into the subversive, surreal sensibilities common in late nineties independent adult animation. While the title was intended for a specialized audience and remained largely confined to underground otaku circles, it stands as a testament to the brief era of the late nineties when independent studios had the autonomy to produce avant-garde projects without the oversight of larger production committees.
