Where it came from
Released in 1987, Pro Golfer Saru: Kouga Hikyou! Kage no Ninpou Golfer Sanjou! is a cinematic expansion of the popular manga and anime series created by Fujiko A. Fujio. The franchise follows Saru, a young prodigy who combines his natural athleticism with unconventional 'ninja' techniques to excel in the sport of golf. This theatrical entry was produced by Shin-Ei Animation during the height of the property's popularity, aiming to translate the series' signature blend of surreal sports action and character-driven drama into a feature-length format for a broader audience.
The film maintains the distinct visual aesthetic associated with Fujiko A. Fujio's works, emphasizing dynamic character designs and expressive, high-stakes golfing sequences. Shin-Ei Animation, known for their long-standing partnership with the Fujiko Fujio studios, utilized the medium of film to elevate the animation quality beyond the constraints of a weekly television schedule. Upon release, the film was received as a nostalgic milestone for fans of the sports anime genre, cementing Saru's legacy as a unique cultural crossover between traditional sports narratives and Japanese folklore tropes.
