Psychic School Wars

Psychic School Wars, or Nerawareta Gakuen, was produced by the acclaimed studio Sunrise and released in 2012 as a feature-length film. The project is a modern adaptation of the 1973 science fiction novel by Taku Mayumura, which has seen numerous iterations across Japanese television and cinema since the seventies. This version was directed by Ryosuke Nakamura, who sought to shift the tone of the classic story from a traditional thriller toward a more atmospheric, character-driven coming-of-age drama focused on the anxieties of high school life.

The film is particularly noted for its lush, painterly aesthetic, which was overseen by art director Toshiyuki Sakaue. By employing a distinct color palette and focusing on the interplay between light and architecture, the production team aimed to evoke a sense of nostalgic melancholy.
