Pucca: Funny Love

Pucca: Funny Love originated in 2000 as a series of web-based animations, or ONA, produced by the South Korean company VOOZ Co., Ltd. The character was originally designed as a mascot for a digital postcard service, quickly gaining traction due to the minimalist aesthetic and the comedic, wordless interactions between Pucca and her love interest, Garu. The animation style relies on simplified geometric shapes and a primary color palette, which helped it transition effectively into a global multimedia franchise encompassing merchandise, apparel, and television broadcasts.

The creative direction behind the series focused on a playful, exaggerated take on the pursuit of affection, characterized by Pucca’s unrelenting energy and Garu’s perpetual state of retreat. By eschewing dialogue in favor of expressive visual cues and music, the creators ensured the shorts remained accessible to international audiences. Upon its debut, the series was well-received for its distinct, bold look, eventually securing significant licensing agreements that solidified its status as an iconic piece of early 2000s internet pop culture.
