Where it came from
Puchimas!: Petit iDOLM@STER - Dai 0 Wa was released in 2012 as a prologue to the animated adaptation of the spin-off manga series. Produced by studio Gathering, this short was designed to introduce the 'Puchidols'—chibi, mascot-like manifestations of the original iDOLM@STER characters—to an audience already familiar with the broader franchise. The adaptation sought to capture the surreal, lighthearted, and comedic tone established by Akane Banpai's original manga, utilizing a distinctive, simplified aesthetic that contrasted sharply with the main series' animation style.
The reception of the short was rooted in its role as a bridge for fans of the existing idol project. By focusing on short, gag-driven interactions, Gathering aimed to emphasize the cute and chaotic nature of the characters, which allowed the production to lean into a more experimental, minimalist visual language. This specific episode served as a proof of concept, successfully transitioning the franchise's successful transmedia strategy into the compact, niche format of the flash-style anime short.
