Where it came from
Race Eizou-hen, or 'Race Video Compilation,' was released in 1999 as a direct-to-video special accompanying the popular Initial D anime franchise. Produced by Studio Comet and later Studio Gallop, the Initial D series was based on Shuichi Shigeno's long-running manga about the underground Japanese street racing scene. This specific compilation was designed to cater to the intense interest in the show's signature 'Eurobeat' musical aesthetic and the technical, high-speed drifting maneuvers depicted on the winding mountain passes of Gunma Prefecture.
The design of this compilation focuses on the series' distinct integration of early computer-generated imagery for its vehicle sequences. By isolating these sequences and pairing them with high-energy soundtrack highlights, the producers sought to provide a definitive visual archive for fans of the franchise's technical racing style. Upon release, it was received as a niche but essential companion piece for enthusiasts who prioritized the authentic simulation of drift culture and the specific mechanical styling of the iconic 1990s Japanese sports cars featured throughout the series.
