Radio City Fantasy: Machikado no Märchen

Radio City Fantasy: Machikado no Märchen was released in 1984 as an original video animation (OVA) produced by Kitty Film. Emerging during the early, experimental period of the home video market in Japan, this production served as a visual companion to the music of the era, reflecting the studio's broader interest in blending animation with contemporary pop culture and urban aesthetic sensibilities. It captures a specific mid-eighties shift toward stylized, atmospheric storytelling intended for home viewing rather than theatrical release.

The visual design of the piece is characteristic of the creative output associated with Kitty Film during the mid-1980s, which often leaned into ethereal and dreamlike imagery. By synthesizing music-driven narratives with soft, illustrative art styles, the project aimed to evoke a sense of fleeting urban magic. While it remains a niche entry in the history of the format, it is often studied by animation historians as a representative example of how studios utilized the OVA medium to experiment with non-traditional, music-heavy visual storytelling before the standard narrative-driven OVA boom.
