Rainbow Sentai Robin was produced by Toei Animation and broadcast in 1966, emerging during the nascent era of Japanese science fiction television. The series follows a young protagonist named Robin, a half-human, half-alien hero who defends Earth with a team of seven robots, each representing a distinct color of the rainbow. This concept was heavily influenced by the contemporary fascination with space exploration and the growing popularity of team-based heroic narratives in manga and anime.

The production featured the legendary Shotaro Ishinomori, a central figure in Japanese pop culture who also conceptualized many of the series' character designs. By blending themes of youthful responsibility with futuristic technology, the show aimed to capture the imagination of a young audience during Japan's rapid economic growth. While it may not have achieved the long-term historical footprint of later sentai genre entries, it remains a significant early example of the genre's structural development and a testament to Ishinomori's early contributions to the medium.
