Where it came from
Rainy Cocoa, released in 2015 by studio EMT Squared, originated as a multimedia project designed to promote the real-world cafe Rainy Color in Tokyo. The series serves as a gentle, slice-of-life narrative centered on the daily interactions between customers and staff, reflecting a broader trend in Japanese media of using short-form animation to establish a cozy, atmospheric brand identity.
The character designs were inspired by the original illustrations created for the project's mobile game and web manga components. The production aimed for a minimalist and approachable aesthetic to capture the relaxed environment of a boutique coffee shop. While the series received modest critical attention upon release, it remains a notable example of promotional anime that successfully expanded its niche following into multiple subsequent seasons.
