Where it came from
Rain Town was released in 2011 as a short independent animated film, produced as a graduation project at Kyoto Seika University. The film depicts a melancholy, rain-drenched world populated by robots, crafted with a distinctive, muted aesthetic that emphasizes loneliness and the passage of time. Its creation served as a showcase for the studio's focus on experimental storytelling and atmospheric world-building within the medium of digital animation.
The film was written and directed by Hiroyasu Ishida, who sought to evoke a sense of quiet nostalgia through a wordless narrative. The design prioritizes environmental storytelling, using the relentless rain and the weathered, urban landscape to convey the emotional state of its inhabitants. Upon its release, the short garnered significant critical acclaim within the animation community for its technical proficiency and emotional resonance, eventually winning several awards including the Excellence Award at the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival.
