Where it came from
Released in 2023, Ramen wo Tabete Iru Toki dake Naze ka Nounai de Kaiwa ga Dekiru Futari is a short-form original net animation produced by Studio Drive. The project originated from a popular web manga series that centers on the surreal yet grounded premise of two individuals who find they can only communicate telepathically while consuming ramen together. The adaptation was conceived to translate the manga's quiet, observational comedy into a minimalist visual format, emphasizing the meditative nature of the dining experience against the backdrop of their internal dialogue.
The production leans into a restrained aesthetic, intentionally choosing a low-key animation style to mirror the mundane setting of a ramen shop. By focusing on the interplay between the silent atmosphere and the characters' inner thoughts, the creators sought to capture a specific sense of urban isolation bridged by a shared culinary ritual. Upon its release, the series was well-received by audiences for its niche appeal and the skillful way it maintained the source material's pacing, serving as a distinct example of the 'iyashikei' or healing subgenre within short-form animation.
