The Earth lies darkened and deserted. Despite the best efforts of the film's heroine, Hikaru, the evil-filled castle of Cephiro has taken over the world and stands in the center of a lifeless Tokyo. Before the ice-witch Alcyone can take her revenge on Hikaru, she is rescued by Lantis, a young man who seals her into a magical maze where she is challenged to prove her powers while her friends are hunted down by Cephiro's warlocks.
Fleeing through the silent city, Umi and Fuu must seek out the sleeping Mashin; godlike creatures that will fuse with them to form giant warriors of awesome destructive power. But the Magic Knights are afraid, untrained and alone... will even the Mashin be enough to save them from the evil acts of Cephiro?
Note: During 1998 Toshihiro Hirano released a Director's cut called "Special Edition - The Wings of Hope", including the three episodes in a two-hour movie with some new scenes and dialogue changes

Where it came from
Released in 1997, the Magic Knight Rayearth OVA series was produced by Polygram Japan as a reimagining of the original manga and television anime by the creative collective CLAMP. Unlike the television series, which maintained the lighthearted fantasy adventure tone of the source material, the OVA adopted a darker, more dramatic aesthetic, reinterpreting the characters and the world of Cephiro with a somber, cinematic focus on their personal struggles and interpersonal conflicts.
The production utilized high-quality animation techniques typical of late nineties original video animations, aiming to provide a mature, self-contained narrative experience for fans who had followed the franchise during its peak popularity. While the artistic direction was met with intrigue for its departure from the established series style, critical reception was mixed; loyalists were often divided by the drastic alterations to character motivations and the truncated world-building, which contrasted sharply with the expansive scope of the original storytelling.
