Where it came from
ReBoot debuted in 1994 as the first half-hour television series to be entirely computer-animated. Produced by Mainframe Entertainment in Vancouver, it was created by Gavin Blair, John Grace, Phil Mitchell, and Ian Pearson. The show was conceived as a daring technical experiment to push the boundaries of digital rendering, set within the interior workings of a computer system where programs and viruses existed as sentient entities.
The character designs were heavily influenced by the constraints of mid-nineties hardware, leading to a distinct, geometric aesthetic that mirrored the limitations and raw potential of early 3D modeling. Upon its release, the series was received as a landmark achievement in visual media, garnering praise for its narrative complexity and its role in proving the commercial viability of fully computer-generated storytelling for a mainstream audience.
