Where it came from
Red Hawk: Weapon of Death, originally known in South Korea as Red Hawk, was released on home video by Manga Entertainment in 1995. The film is a significant example of the burgeoning South Korean animation industry during the early 1990s, emerging at a time when companies like Manga Entertainment were aggressively acquiring international animation to feed the growing Western appetite for mature and gritty anime-adjacent content.
The production is steeped in the stylistic conventions of the era, blending historical motifs with dark, action-oriented narratives common in the martial arts manhwa tradition. While Manga Entertainment marketed the film to capitalize on the success of titles like Akira and Ghost in the Shell, the film itself is better understood as a localized adaptation of South Korean creative output that sought to translate regional animation aesthetics for a global, cult-oriented audience.
