Where it came from
Red Garden: Dead Girls serves as an epilogue to the 2006 television anime series produced by studio GONZO. Released in 2007, the OVA was crafted to conclude the narrative arc following the ambiguous finale of the original series, focusing on the supernatural struggles of four high school girls in New York City who find themselves caught in a cycle of resurrection and combat.
The series and its subsequent OVA were characterized by a distinctive, gritty aesthetic that departed from the traditional glossy look of mid-2000s anime, utilizing a darker color palette to reflect its gothic themes. Directed by Ko Matsuo, the project aimed to merge elements of a teen drama with dark fantasy, garnering a niche but appreciative following for its experimental visual style and its willingness to tackle themes of trauma and existential dread.
