Drawing upon Roland Barthes’s work of the same name, A Lover’s Discourse looks into intimate relationships. A couple playing a game in a café tries to talk about love but merely circles the topic, hardly reaching its essence.

Where it came from
Renai Discourse was produced by the Tokyo University of the Arts (Geidai) animation department, a program known for fostering experimental and highly personal storytelling among its graduate students. The film emerged as part of an institutional effort to push the boundaries of independent Japanese animation, encouraging creators to blend traditional narrative tropes with abstract, contemporary artistic sensibilities.
The film is defined by a deliberate, minimalist visual language that emphasizes character psychology over traditional spectacle. By utilizing a restrained color palette and fluid, hand-drawn techniques, the production team aimed to capture the quiet friction of modern communication. Upon its release within the festival circuit, it was received as a contemplative work that reflects the rigorous academic environment of its origin.
