Where it came from
Renegade Immortal, known in Chinese as Xian Ni, is a 3D animated ONA adapted from the popular web novel by Er Gen. Produced by Tencent Penguin Pictures and released starting in 2023, the series belongs to the expansive genre of xianxia, which centers on cultivation, immortality, and martial arts. The production reflects the high-end technical standards of contemporary Chinese animation, utilizing advanced motion capture and character modeling to translate the novel's dense, atmospheric world-building into a visual format.
The series focuses on the protagonist Wang Lin, a character defined by his resilience and moral complexity within a harsh, meritocratic cultivation society. The design team focused on maintaining a darker, more grounded aesthetic compared to many of its contemporaries, emphasizing the protagonist's transition from a naive youth to a pragmatic, hardened figure. Upon its release, the adaptation was widely praised by the existing fanbase for its faithful adherence to the source material's tone and its significant improvements in animation fluidity over earlier long-form Chinese fantasy adaptations.
