Yomigaeru Sora was initially supposed to have a female protagonist with sharper animation. Due to Yuji Matsukura (J.C.Staff Executive Officer, Head of Production), Katsushi Sakurabi (Director), and Fumihiko Takayama (Series Composition) outvoting Kiyoshi Sugiyama (Producer), the story was changed to have a male protagonist with simpler animation.
Sakurabi's original idea for the anime was made into pilot and the pilot was included with the 7th volume of the Limited Edition DVD Box Set.

Where it came from
Rescue Angel originated as a special production associated with the animation studio J.C.Staff, known for its prolific output in the late 1990s and 2000s. The project represents the studio’s approach to niche experimental animation and character-focused storytelling, reflecting the broader Japanese trend of creating standalone specials or original video animations to explore thematic concepts that did not fit into traditional serialized television formats.
The visual design emphasizes the characteristic soft, expressive aesthetic common in J.C.Staff’s work from this era, focusing on fluid character animation and thematic color palettes intended to evoke a sense of warmth and duty. While the piece serves as an example of the studio's technical versatility, it remains a smaller entry in their extensive catalog, generally received by fans as a gentle exploration of the studio's recurring motifs of guardianship and emotional resonance.
