Rick and Morty: The Anime

Rick and Morty: The Anime was produced by Telecom Animation Film and directed by Takashi Sano, building on the success of two previously released anime-style short films featuring the characters. The series was developed as a standalone expansion of the Adult Swim franchise, aiming to translate the chaotic energy and dark humor of the original show into a distinct, serialized Japanese animation aesthetic that emphasizes character-driven storytelling.

Takashi Sano focused on maintaining the core emotional arcs of Rick and Morty while integrating tropes and stylistic flourishes common to the anime medium. Upon its release in 2024, the series was noted for its departure from the traditional episodic structure of the flagship show, offering a unified narrative approach that explored the relationship between Rick and his grandson through a lens filtered by the production studio’s long history of hand-drawn animation excellence.
