Where it came from
Released in 2021, this special was produced as a short film to bridge the gap between television seasons by bringing the Rick and Morty franchise into the distinctive aesthetic of Japanese anime. Developed by Sola Digital Arts and directed by Masaru Matsumoto, the project leaned heavily into the stylistic tropes of the yokai genre, reimagining the titular characters through a lens of traditional Japanese folklore and modern animation techniques.
The production served as a collaborative experiment in cross-cultural animation, aiming to blend the cynical, fast-paced humor of the American original with the high-energy, visually complex sensibilities of Japanese animation studios. Upon its release, it was met with positive reception from fans of both franchises, largely praised for its faithful adherence to the source material's character dynamics while successfully executing a visual overhaul that felt intentional rather than merely cosmetic.
