Where it came from
Rick and Morty vs. Genocider is an eight-minute animated short released in 2020 to promote the Adult Swim series in the Japanese market. Produced by Telecom Animation Film and directed by Takashi Sano, the short was created to bridge the gap between television seasons while experimenting with a distinct anime aesthetic that diverged from the show’s Western roots.
Takashi Sano, who later directed the Rick and Morty: The Anime series, aimed to translate the chaotic energy of the show into a high-octane, melancholic visual style. By focusing on a self-contained narrative involving a multiverse-spanning threat, the team sought to honor the source material while utilizing the studio’s signature fluid animation techniques, resulting in a project that was warmly received by fans for its innovative take on established characters.
