Where it came from
Released in 2011 as a direct-to-video follow-up to the television series Rio: Rainbow Gate!, this special production was crafted by studio Xebec. It was designed to capitalize on the popularity of the Rio series, which was based on a well-known line of slot machines from NetEnt. The narrative expands on the adventures of Rio Tachibana, the esteemed 'Gatekeeper' at the Howard Resort Hotel, maintaining the franchise's focus on high-stakes competitive gaming aesthetics and vibrant character designs.
The animation reflects the signature style of Xebec during the late 2000s and early 2010s, prioritizing fluid character movement and bright, saturated palettes to mirror the energy of the casino environment. While the television series received mixed critical attention for its niche focus on gambling culture, this special was intended for an audience already deeply engaged with the franchise's lore and multimedia components, serving as an aesthetic capstone to the original run.
