Where it came from
Ryo was produced by Studio GONZO as a short film in 2013, released as part of the Young Animator Training Project's Anime Mirai initiative. The project was designed by the Japanese government's Agency for Cultural Affairs to nurture emerging talent within the animation industry, providing a platform for studios to mentor younger artists on high-quality short-form productions.
The film follows the story of a young boy named Ryo who discovers a mysterious book that transports him into the world of Japanese folklore, specifically interacting with figures from legend. The visual style reflects the experimental nature of the Anime Mirai program, focusing on fluid character animation and an imaginative, fantasy-oriented aesthetic that showcased the studio's technical versatility during a period of transition in the medium.
