Where it came from
Ryoma! The Prince of Tennis, also known as Ryoma! Shinsei Gekijōban Tennis no Ōjisama, was released in 2021 as the first 3D computer-animated feature film in the long-running Prince of Tennis franchise. Created to celebrate the series' history, the film follows the titular character, Ryoma Echizen, as he travels back in time to the era when his father was a professional tennis player in the United States. The project was conceived as an original story bridging the gap between the original manga series and the subsequent The New Prince of Tennis storyline.
The animation was produced by The Monk Studios in collaboration with Keica, under the supervision of the original manga creator, Takeshi Konomi. The production utilized 3D CGI to capture the dynamic, high-speed nature of the series' signature tennis matches, aiming to provide a fresh visual perspective on the established character designs. Upon its theatrical release in Japan, the film was noted for its departure from the traditional 2D hand-drawn animation style of previous adaptations, receiving a varied reception from fans who were accustomed to the classic look of the franchise.
