Where it came from
Ryokunohara Labyrinth: Sparkling Phantom was produced in 1990 by AIC, a studio known for its contributions to the golden age of original video animation in Japan. The project served as an adaptation of a manga series by Tsuruta Kenji, whose distinctively atmospheric and ethereal artistic style became the cornerstone of the production. The intent was to capture the whimsical, slightly surreal tone of the source material, focusing on the character-driven narrative of a young woman navigating mysterious and supernatural occurrences.
Upon its release, the OVA was noted for its departure from the high-octane action typical of contemporary 1990s anime, favoring a more contemplative and visually lush aesthetic. While the animation was well-regarded for its technical proficiency and faithful interpretation of Tsuruta's soft-line character designs, it remained a niche cult classic rather than a mainstream hit. It is frequently discussed today by enthusiasts of early 1990s aesthetic animation for its unique blend of slice-of-life and fantasy elements.
