Ryuuichi Manga Gekijou: Onbu Obake

Ryuuichi Manga Gekijou: Onbu Obake was produced by Eiken and first aired in 1972 as part of a series showcasing the work of cartoonist Ryuuichi Yokoyama. The show was centered on the character Onbu Obake, a small, mischievous spirit that piggybacked on humans, reflecting Yokoyama’s signature style of blending whimsical Japanese folklore with satirical social commentary. By this stage in his career, Yokoyama was an established figure in post-war manga, and the series served as a vehicle to bring his minimalist, expressive characters to the burgeoning television animation medium.

The production utilized a simplified animation style that remained faithful to Yokoyama's original pen-and-ink aesthetics, prioritizing character movement and comedic timing over complex backgrounds. While the series did not achieve the widespread international cult status of some of its contemporaries, it remains a notable example of early 1970s Japanese television animation that prioritized episodic, fable-like storytelling. It is remembered primarily as a period piece that documented the adaptation of print cartooning into the dynamic, evolving landscape of Japanese broadcast television.
