Where it came from
Ryuuzou to Shichinin no Kobun-tachi × FROGMAN was produced in 2015 by DLE Inc. as a collaborative promotional ONA to support the release of the live-action feature film Ryuuzou and the Seven Henchmen, directed by Takeshi Kitano. The short film serves as a stylistic bridge between Kitano's comedic yakuza narrative and the distinct, lo-fi aesthetic of FROGMAN, the creator behind the viral Eagle Talon series.
The animation was conceptualized by FROGMAN, who sought to reinterpret Kitano's iconic elderly gangsters through his signature minimalist and absurdist lens. By utilizing simplified character designs and repetitive, comedic pacing, the project aimed to reach a younger, digital-native demographic while maintaining the spirit of the original film's character dynamics. Upon release, it was received as a lighthearted marketing experiment that successfully merged the sensibilities of cult comedy animation with mainstream Japanese cinema.
