When the monstrous Gyumaoh was defeated by the war god Nataku Taishi and imprisoned in Houtou Castle, an era of peace began in the land of Togenkyo. Now, hundreds of years later, those seeking to resurrect Gyumaoh have unleashed a plague upon the world. The wave of negative power generated by his attempted resurrection has driven youkai to the brink of insanity. To save humanity from violent slaughter, Kanzeon Bosatsu sends Son Goku, Genjou Sanzou, Sha Gojyo, and Cho Hakkai to the west in order to prevent Gyumaoh from rising once again.

Where it came from
Saiyuki RELOAD: ZEROIN was produced by Studio LIDENFILMS and aired in 2022 as a television series adaptation of the Even a Worm arc from Kazuya Minekura’s long-running manga series. The project was conceived to bring a darker, high-stakes chapter of the Journey to the West-inspired fantasy to modern audiences, focusing on the team’s confrontation with the villainous Hazel Grouse. The production aimed to honor the distinct aesthetic of Minekura's original manga, utilizing a gritty, cinematic visual style to emphasize the emotional tension between the four protagonists.
The series design maintains the iconic character silhouettes established in previous installments while updating the technical quality to meet contemporary animation standards. Under the direction of Misato Takada, the production sought to balance intense action sequences with the character-driven narrative moments that have defined the franchise since its inception in the late 1990s. Upon its release, it was received as a faithful continuation that satisfied longtime fans by highlighting the evolving camaraderie and internal struggles of Sanzo, Goku, Gojyo, and Hakkai.
