Where it came from
Saiyuki Requiem was released in 2001 as the first feature film adaptation of Kazuya Minekura's popular manga series. Produced by Studio Pierrot, the film serves as a standalone side story that fits within the established lore of the Journey to the West-inspired narrative. It was crafted to capitalize on the success of the 2000 television anime series, offering fans a more cinematic expansion of the characters' interpersonal dynamics and their ongoing quest toward the west.
The film was directed by Hayato Date, a veteran of the series who focused on maintaining the dark, stylish aesthetic that defined Minekura's original illustrations. The character designs were handled by Moriyasu Taniguchi, who adapted the manga's distinct bishōnen character art for the big screen. Upon its release, the film was received as a solid addition to the franchise, praised by the fan base for its polished animation quality and its ability to capture the melancholy tone that characterizes the Saiyuki universe.
