Saiyuuki

The 1999 Saiyuuki OVA was produced by studio Tokyo Kids as an early adaptation of Kazuya Minekura's popular manga series. Released during a period when the source material was gaining significant traction, this two-part original video animation sought to capture the series' unique blend of reimagined Buddhist mythology and contemporary aesthetic sensibilities. It served as a tonal predecessor to the later, more expansive television series, establishing the core character dynamics of the four protagonists on their journey west.

The character designs for this adaptation reflect the gritty, rock-and-roll inspired visual style that Minekura introduced to the genre, moving away from traditional depictions of classical literature. While it was received by fans primarily as a preliminary window into the world of the manga, the project remains a significant artifact for collectors of 1990s anime, marking the first time the characters were brought to life through animation and setting the visual language that would influence subsequent adaptations of the franchise.
