Where it came from
Sakana no Sakana, or Fish of the Fish, is an experimental short film produced by Studio Ghibli in 2001. It was commissioned as part of a collaborative project involving several prominent Japanese animation directors, aimed at exploring creative visual narratives outside of the studio's traditional feature-length format. The project allowed Ghibli’s team to experiment with more fluid, abstract storytelling techniques that differed from the meticulous, detail-oriented approach typically seen in their major theatrical releases.
The film is noted for its minimalist aesthetic and whimsical conceptual design, which reflects the studio's interest in environmental themes and the interconnectedness of nature. Created by the Ghibli creative team under the studio’s guidance, the work was designed to evoke a sense of quiet wonder rather than narrative complexity. Upon its release, it was received as a charming curiosity, primarily appreciated by animation scholars and dedicated Ghibli enthusiasts as a glimpse into the studio's stylistic versatility during the early 2000s.
