Where it came from
Saki Biyori is a 2015 original video animation released as a supplemental entry to the Saki franchise, which focuses on the intense and often supernatural world of competitive mahjong. Produced by Studio Gokumi, the animation was bundled with the fourteenth volume of the Saki manga, serving as a lighthearted expansion for long-term fans who had followed the series' expansion from the original Kiyosumi High School tournament arc into various spin-offs.
The animation features character designs adapted from Ritz Kobayashi’s original manga, maintaining the distinct visual style that blends high-stakes sports tension with slice-of-life comedy. Studio Gokumi utilized this project to lean into the more comedic and chibi-inspired tropes associated with the series' side-story segments, which were well-received by the dedicated community for offering a brief, whimsical reprieve from the high-tension mahjong matches featured in the main televised seasons.
