Saki: Achiga-hen - Episode of Side-A - Kuro no Tanjoubi

Saki: Achiga-hen - Episode of Side-A - Kuro no Tanjoubi is a special episode released in 2015, serving as a direct continuation and supplement to the Achiga-hen spin-off series. It was produced by Studio Gokumi, which took over the animation production duties for the Saki franchise starting with the Achiga-hen arc. The episode focuses on the character Kuro Matsumi, providing a deeper look into her background and personal history, specifically celebrating the narrative beats surrounding her life and development outside of the main mahjong tournaments.

The production maintains the aesthetic established by the Achiga-hen television series, utilizing vibrant character designs and dynamic sequences intended to capture the high-stakes, supernatural intensity of the series' mahjong matches. As part of the broader Saki franchise, which originated from Ritz Kobayashi’s manga, this special was received by the fanbase as a welcome character study that fleshed out the supporting cast. The animation direction reflects the studio's commitment to the franchise's established visual shorthand, balancing lighthearted moments with the focused intensity typical of the competitive mahjong genre.
