Where it came from
Samurai Hormone: THE ANIMATION was released in 2014 by Studio Mitsu as an original video animation, or OVA. The project emerged during a period when independent studios were experimenting with blending historical jidaigeki aesthetics with surrealist humor and unconventional character designs. It was intended as a stylistic departure from standard action-oriented anime, prioritizing a distinct, absurdist visual language that sought to subvert the stoic tropes of the samurai genre.
The animation was produced by a small team at Studio Mitsu, which drew inspiration from experimental avant-garde movements in early 2000s Japanese animation. While the piece garnered a niche cult following among enthusiasts of experimental OVA formats for its unconventional pacing and bold color palettes, it remained an obscure entry in the broader landscape of 2014 releases, largely due to its limited distribution and non-traditional narrative structure.
