San Zhi Lang

San Zhi Lang, or Three-Eared San, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio during the mid-20th century, a period when Chinese animation was flourishing under the guidance of state-supported artists who sought to integrate traditional folklore with modern visual storytelling. The film was created as part of the studio's broader initiative to develop indigenous aesthetic styles, drawing heavily on the traditions of Chinese ink wash painting and folk paper-cutting to establish a distinct national identity in animation.

The studio employed legendary animators and designers who prioritized narrative simplicity and moral resonance, aiming to produce content that was both accessible to children and rich in cultural symbolism. San Zhi Lang was received as a charming example of this era, characterized by its fluid movement and stylized character designs that reflected the studio’s commitment to technical experimentation and artistic integrity within the medium of traditional cel animation.
