Sangokushi Daiichibu Eiyuutachi no Yoake

Sangokushi Daiichibu Eiyuutachi no Yoake, released in 1992, serves as the first entry in a trilogy of animated films produced by Toei Animation. It adapts the sprawling Chinese historical epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a foundational text in East Asian literature. The production was spearheaded by director Tomoharu Katsumata, who sought to translate the complex political maneuvering and military conflict of the Han Dynasty into an accessible cinematic format for a Japanese audience.

The film is notable for its ambitious scale and its traditional hand-drawn aesthetic, which reflects the classic animation style of the early 1990s at Toei. It features an original score by Masashi Sada, whose composition became a defining element of the series' atmosphere. While the film was developed to honor the source material's gravity, it also leaned into the sensibilities of the period's historical adventure dramas, receiving attention for its narrative condensation of the novel's vast cast of characters and shifting allegiances.
