Sanmao Liulang Ji

Sanmao Liulang Ji, or Wanderings of Sanmao, was released as a live-action television series in 1996, adapting the iconic comic strip character created by Zhang Leping in 1935. The series sought to capture the poignancy of the original material, which followed the life of a homeless, three-haired orphan in pre-revolutionary Shanghai. By grounding the narrative in the historical hardships of the 1930s and 1940s, the production aimed to resonate with both older generations who grew up with the comics and younger viewers unfamiliar with the character's profound cultural impact.

The adaptation was notable for its earnest portrayal of Sanmao's resilience, casting a young actor to embody the character's signature look. Producers emphasized social realism, contrasting the innocence of the protagonist against the harsh, often cruel environment of the city. While the series faced the inherent challenge of translating a static, episodic comic format into a cohesive television drama, it was generally well-received as a faithful tribute to Zhang Leping's vision, earning praise for its thematic depth and its successful preservation of the character as a symbol of endurance for the Chinese public.
