Sanmao Liulang Ji

Sanmao Liulang Ji, or Adventures of Sanmao the Wanderer, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in the early 1980s. The series serves as a direct adaptation of the iconic comic strip character created by Zhang Leping in the 1930s. The narrative, which chronicles the hardships and resilience of an orphaned street urchin, was born out of a desire to reflect the social turbulence and widespread poverty of pre-revolutionary China through the eyes of an innocent child.

The animation style draws heavily from Zhang Leping’s original minimalist line work, prioritizing emotional resonance over complex visual spectacle. The studio aimed to preserve the poignant, episodic nature of the source material, ensuring that the visual medium conveyed the same empathy and social critique that made the print version a cultural cornerstone. Upon its release, the series was well-received by domestic audiences as a faithful and touching tribute to a beloved national literary figure.
