Sanmao Liulang Ji

Sanmao Liulang Ji, or Adventures of Sanmao the Wanderer, was produced by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1949. Based on the iconic comic strip character created by Zhang Leping in 1935, the film serves as a poignant social critique of the hardships faced by orphaned children in pre-revolutionary China. By adapting the beloved illustrations into motion, the studio aimed to highlight the plight of the marginalized and foster a collective empathy for the youth affected by war and poverty.

The production utilized a style that remained faithful to Zhang Leping's minimalist but emotionally expressive character designs. The film is recognized as a landmark in Chinese animation for its transition from traditional print storytelling to the cinematic medium. Upon its release, it was lauded for its cultural significance and its ability to maintain the narrative integrity of the original source material while utilizing the distinct visual vocabulary of the mid-century Shanghai animation school.
