Where it came from
School Rumble was adapted for television by Studio Comet and broadcast on TV Tokyo in 2004, drawing its source material from Jin Kobayashi's long-running manga series. The anime emerged during a mid-2000s surge in high-energy school comedies, aiming to blend slapstick humor with the quintessential romantic entanglements of the genre. Its production sought to capture the frenetic pacing of the original manga, focusing on the unrequited affections of protagonist Tenma Tsukamoto and the persistent efforts of delinquent Kenji Harima.
The series was directed by Shinji Takamatsu, who leaned into surrealist comedy and character-driven gags to differentiate the show from more earnest romance titles of the time. Upon release, it was well-received for its witty script, eccentric ensemble cast, and dynamic art style, which often shifted tones to match the exaggerated internal worlds of its teenage characters. It has since maintained a dedicated following as a hallmark of the mid-2000s comedy anime era.
