Where it came from
SD Gundam Force was produced by Sunrise and released in 2004 as the first Gundam series to be fully rendered in 3D computer animation. It was a strategic effort by Bandai to introduce the long-running Gundam franchise to a younger North American audience, shifting away from the serious, gritty tone of earlier entries toward a more accessible, action-oriented aesthetic inspired by the Super Deformed (SD) toy line.
The series was directed by Susumu Nishizawa, who leaned into a lighthearted, episodic format designed to balance Western animation styles with Japanese mecha sensibilities. While it gained a dedicated cult following for its unique fusion of 3D techniques and classic character designs, the show faced mixed reception from established franchise enthusiasts who were accustomed to traditional 2D animation and more complex narrative arcs.
