Where it came from
Sei Michaela Gakuen Hyouriyuuki, known in English as St. Michaela's School Drift, was released as an original video animation in 1990. Emerging during the late 1980s and early 1990s boom for direct-to-video anime, this production fits into the era's fascination with experimental storytelling and psychological horror themes, often packaged within the popular school-based drama format.
The animation was directed by Takashi Anno, with character designs intended to evoke the classic aesthetic of the time while navigating the supernatural plot. It was produced by J.C.Staff, a studio that was beginning to establish its foothold in the industry. As a niche title from this period, it is primarily remembered by collectors as a distinct, albeit obscure, curiosity of the early OVA market that blended adolescent angst with dark, surrealist fantasy.
