Onodera Ritsu has just transferred from his father's publishing company to Marukawa Shoten. Assigned to the shoujo manga division, he crosses path with the person he'd least expected to meet. Takano Masamune is the editor-in-chief of the division Ritsu's been assigned to, and the two seem get off on the wrong foot right from the very start when Takano unexpectedly kisses him. However, there is more to than what meets the eye: Takano is actually Saga, Ritsu's senpai and high school love, whom Ritsu had thought to have played him for a fool by taking his affections for granted when he confessed and summarily dumped him.

Where it came from
Sekai Ichi Hatsukoi, or The World's Greatest First Love, emerged in 2011 as an anime adaptation of the long-running boys' love manga series written and illustrated by Shungiku Nakamura. Produced by Studio DEEN and directed by Chiaki Kon, the series was developed to capture the comedic yet earnest tone of the source material, which depicts the complicated romantic lives of editors working at the fictional Marukawa Publishing house.
The character designs were handled by Yoko Kikuchi, who sought to maintain the distinct, sharp aesthetic of Nakamura’s original artwork while translating the editorial office setting into a vibrant, grounded workspace. Upon its release, the series became a notable entry in the genre, valued by audiences for its meta-commentary on the manga industry and its focus on workplace-driven character dynamics rather than purely traditional romance tropes.
