A legendary masterpiece of love comics, SEKISHOKU Elegy brought baby-boomers to tears for its depiction of the heart-rending sorrow of cohabitation symbolizing young Japanese couples in the 1970s. The famous painter Seiichi Hayashi, well known for his work in Koume Chan candies and Sendai's renowned confectionery Hagi No Tsuki, draws the animation as the original writer and also directs it. Hayashi also teams up with folk singer Morio Agata for the first time in more than three decades. Agata enjoyed a huge hit with a song originating from the comic. New renditions give new life to SEKISHOKU Elegy as a work of Ganime.

Where it came from
Sekishoku Elegy was produced by Toei Animation and released in 2007 as a direct-to-video OVA. It serves as an adaptation of the semi-autobiographical manga by Seiichi Hayashi, a seminal figure in the Japanese underground comics scene of the late 1960s and 1970s. The work is deeply rooted in the aesthetic and cultural atmosphere of the Showa era, capturing the melancholy and artistic struggles of young bohemians living in Tokyo.
The OVA's visual style aims to translate Hayashi’s distinctively minimalist, dreamlike ink-wash illustrations into a fluid animation format. By focusing on the transient nature of memory and romance, the production reflects the experimental spirit of the gekiga movement that heavily influenced the source material. Upon its release, it was recognized as a faithful, albeit stylized, tribute to the original manga's introspective tone and its significant place in the history of Japanese alternative comics.
