The time is Sengoku.
Japan is fractured into many independent nations entangled in ceaseless war. At the center lies Ashina, a land of sacred earth and ancient mystery. Two decades after Sword Saint Isshin Ashina reclaimed the region in a brutal coup, a new threat emerges from within: The Interior Ministry. Desperate to protect his homeland, Isshin's grandson Genichiro turns to forbidden powers. The only hope lies in a kidnapped boy — the Divine Heir — and his silent protector: a loyal shinobi known only as Sekiro.
This is the story of a lord and his retainer — and their quest to restore balance to a nation on the edge.

Where it came from
Sekiro: No Defeat, produced by the animation studio Qzil.la and released in 2027, serves as an expansion of the narrative established in FromSoftware’s 2019 action-adventure game. The series was developed to explore the internal struggles of the protagonist, Wolf, following the events of the game’s various endings, focusing on the thematic burden of immortality and the cyclical nature of conflict in the Sengoku-era fantasy setting.
The artistic direction for the series prioritized a fluid, high-contrast aesthetic that mimics the kinetic motion of the game’s deflection-based combat mechanics. Qzil.la utilized a hybrid of traditional cel-animation and sophisticated digital layering to capture the architectural intricacy of Ashina Castle. Upon its release, the series was noted for its commitment to the game's atmospheric tone, receiving praise from fans for maintaining the source material's deliberate pacing and punishing combat choreography.
