Where it came from
Seventh Inning Stretch is a 1982 television film directed by John Korty, produced as part of the anthology series ABC Afterschool Specials. The narrative centers on a teenage boy who navigates the complexities of a changing relationship with his father, framed against the backdrop of their shared passion for baseball. Emerging from an era where network television prioritized social-issue dramas for younger audiences, the film aimed to provide a grounded, emotionally resonant exploration of family dynamics and adolescent development.
The production relied on the intimate, character-driven storytelling that defined the Afterschool Special format, emphasizing relatable performances over high-concept spectacle. While the film served as a vehicle for established television actors of the time, its design and pacing reflected the deliberate, earnest approach common to early 1980s teleplays. It was generally received as a standard entry within the genre, praised for its focus on intergenerational conflict, though it remains a niche piece of television history today.
